Your June 24 NINBY (Not in New Bedford's yard) editorial was on target, hopefully barring a casino for the city. Benefits to New Bedford and neighboring towns from Middleboro's $15 million would be negligible — traffic, crime, prostitution and pollution vastly outweighing same.
Mayor Menino is right: Put casinos and their ilk where gambling already exists, along with traffic and other ancillary results, such as at Suffolk Downs/East Boston, where law enforcement already deals with the problems. That area has the huge population (market) already in place. That population goes home every night and doesn't pollute the neighborhood.
And the income should be worth it for the Commonwealth — far more than rural Middleboro. Let's not pollute the outlying countryside.
