FALL RIVER – Breakfasts are a natural for fundraisers, but the Fall River Pride Committee’s brunch this Sunday offers something a bit different: drag queens.

Drag Me to Brunch, a brunch buffet and drag queen show with the professional Queens of the SouthCoast, is a fundraiser to bring a Pride Festival to Fall River in June, said Sean Connell, co-chair of the Fall River Pride Committee, now an official working project of the SouthCoast LGBTQ Network.

The brunch marks the first time the Queens of the SouthCoast have performed in Fall River, said Connell. Drag queens Jaihla Rhodes and Crystal Diamonds are slated to perform along with special guest Teela Renee.

The idea for the Fall River Pride Committee started with a Pride Month event at Government Center last June. With the raising of a Pride flag and a cake from city counselor Pam Laliberte-Lebeau, Connell said the Pride Committee was formed with a mission of holding a Pride Festival here in Fall River. Modeled after the Pride Festival in New Bedford, Connell said it would feature a resource fair and stage performances.

“We want to be a resource for the LGBTQ community in Fall River and to increase visibility of the LGBTQ community here,” said Connell.

Born and raised in Fall River, Connell said he knew he was gay in middle school, but there were no resources back then. “I’m thankful and blessed at how far we’ve come. Fall River voted ‘Yes’ on Question 3 (supporting transgender rights). It’s uplifting to see the Fall River community embracing us. We had our first float in the parade last Saturday and it’s time to bring our community out. We are part of the diversity that makes America so great.”

So far, he said they’ve sold about 50 tickets to the Drag Me to Brunch fundraiser.

Drag Me to Brunch will take place on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to about 3 p.m. at the Toniq Ultra Lounge Nightclub, 277 South Main St., Fall River. This is an 18+ event as there will be crude humor and a cash bar. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Tickets are limited.
