DARTMOUTH — The Dartmouth Rotary had "chess" the ticket last weekend for SouthCoast students looking to spend their Saturday in the company of kings and queens.
Not to mention bishops and knights. And, oh yes, even some rooks and pawns.
The occasion was the Rotary's inaugural scholastic chess tournament, held at the Dartmouth Middle School.
Kids of various ages and chess ability levels turned out for the event which had a purpose beyond the considerable challenge of the venerable board game.
Rotary member Terri Hamm said it was also "a fun way for people to learn about the Rotary" and its efforts to “connect with community members through outreach.”
The SouthEast New England Chess Association (SENECA) oversaw the event and Rotary officials said they hope to do it again next year.
For the kids who took part, it was clearly a winner.
