NEW BEDFORD — After taking a ride on a stolen scooter, a wallet found its way back to its rightful owner Friday.
Officer Stephen Brown, a veteran of the force, pulled over a 19-year-old driving a scooter but not wearing a helmet around 7:50 a.m. near Tallman and North Front streets.
Brown discovered the scooter was reported stolen and the wallet — complete with cash, credit cards and ID — that the driver was carrying wasn't his.
Brandon Frank, 19, of 437 Cedar Grove St., Apartment 3, New Bedford, was arrested and charged with operating a motorized scooter without a helmet, unlicensed operation of a motorized scooter, receiving stolen property more than $250 and receiving stolen property less than $250, according to the NBPD police logs.
But the officer didn't stop there.
Brown went to the bank where the credit cards were issued and, by chance, bumped into the victim, police said. The officer recognized the 21-year-old New Bedford resident from the ID that was in the wallet. Brown returned the wallet to its grateful owner on the spot.
The victim, whom police are not identifying, said his wallet was stolen from his car the night before.
