NEW BEDFORD — Gang-unit police on patrol in the South End of New Bedford made two arrests Wednesday after finding a 19-year-old carrying crack cocaine, according to the New Bedford Police Department.

Police said they approached a group of individuals in the area of 37 Acushnet Ave. and found Jovanie Duren, 19, of 36 Katharine St., Apt. 2, New Bedford, in possession of a small amount of crack cocaine. As officers attempted to place him under arrest, he resisted, police said.

Duren was charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute and resisting arrest.

Another person at the scene attempted to interfere with the arrest, according to police. They arrested Samuel Santana, 21, of 35 Larch St., New Bedford, for that offense. He was charged with interference with a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The patrol was part of a series of patrols in the South End in response to residents' concerns about suspicious activity, according to the Police Department.
