ACUSHNET — Commander Donald R. Lafond & Auxiliary President Diane E. Lafond of the Thomas E Tuttle VFW Post 7239 are congratulating the following award winners in the VFW's iconic essay contests.
In the VFW "Patriots Pen Essay Competition," Victoria M. Perry, a home-schooled eighth grade student, was the first place post winner while Angelann M. Polangcos, a sixth-grader at Albert Ford Middle School, Acushnet was the second place winner, according to a news release.
Patriots Pen gives students in Grades 6-8 the opportunity to express their opinions on a patriotic theme and improve their writing skills.
The 2017-02018 theme is "America's Gift to My Generation."
Victoria was also the first place winner in Bristol (County) VFW District Six judging. She now enters the Department of Mass-VFW State Finals.
Sophia R. Fortin, a freshman at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School is the post winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars:"Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Competition."
Voice of Democracy gives high school students the chance "to voice their opinions on their responsibilities to our country and foster patriotism," the VFW said.
The 2017-2018 theme is "American History. Our Hope for the Future."
Students aren't the only ones recognized by the VFW Post 7239.
Thomas R. Canastra, engineering technology teacher at GNBVT, is the post winner of the 2017-2018 VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher of the year Grade level 9 - 12.
According to the post, the award "recognizes classroom teachers for promoting citizenship education and patriotism with their students. It also honors Americas educators who perpetuate our Nation's noblest traditions and highest values.
"Mr. Canastra cares about America and instills a sense of pride in his students. (He) was also selected as the winner in Bristol (County) District Six and the Department of Massachusetts Veterans of Foreign Wars Grade level 9 - 12 State Winner.
Canastra now enters the National Competition where the winner receives an all expense paid trip to the VFW National Convention to be held in Kansas City, Missouri in July and monetary awards for both the teacher and school.
