FALL RIVER — A New Bedford man pleaded guilty to charges he beat his pregnant girlfriend last year and then tried to pressure her not to testify against him, the DA's office.
Adrien Camacho, 35, pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, intimidation of a witness and attempt to suborn perjury, according to Gregg Miliote, a spokesman fior Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III.
Judge Renee Dupuis sentenced Camacho on Friday in Superior Court to 3 to 5 years in state prison, he said.
During an argument with his pregnant girlfriend on May 5, Camacho struck her several times in the face and head and threatened to kill her, while holding a knife to her face, Miliote said.
Camacho was ordered held the following day in New Bedford District Court for a dangerousness hearing, he said. Prior to the hearing, Camacho called the victim twice from jail, telling her not to show up or if she does, what exactly to say.
At the time, Camacho was on probation after being released from prison for charges relating to a 2005 shooting in New Bedford, he said.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Thompson.
