UPDATE: The DOT says the bridge is operating normally, detour to I-195 has been removed.

The New Bedford Fairhaven Bridge is currently closed to motor vehicle and marine traffic because of electrical problems at the bridge, a state DOT spokeswoman said.

Vehicles cannot cross the bridge because the bridge's knife and barrier gates are stuck in the down-position, according to Jacquelyn Goddard, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation.

Goddard said late Monday afternoon that an electrician is on their way to evaluate the problem. She added that detours are in place.

She also said the mechanical problems are also affecting marine traffic, as well, explaining ships cannot pass underneath the bridge, although she was not sure exactly why this is happening.

The problem occurred with the 3:15 p.m. opening of the bridge, a bridge operator said.

New Bedford police said they were assigned to details at various on-ramps to the bridge — the Octopus, Route 18 — to block traffic from trying to cross the bridge.
