It’s blueberry season. And strawberry season. And cucumber season.

It’s July – so there’s lots in season. It’s a time when locally nutritious produce is ready for picking and eating. And because local farmers’ markets and farm stands are open, it’s also affordable.

So grab a tomato, an eggplant and some green beans and get healthy. And guess what? Sweet corn is on the way.

At Almeida’s Vegetable Patch in Swansea, owner Irene Almeida said it’s been a “good season” so far.

“I’ve been seeing a lot of my loyal customers plus new ones,” Almeida said.

There’s just one little problem at the moment.

“We need rain,” Almeida said.

While her native plum and cherry tomatoes are ripe and selling well, the larger garden tomatoes and sweet corn aren’t ready just yet. What they need is a little help from Mother Nature.

“The corn is looking good,” Almeida said.
