I have this hoodie I really like.
Whether I’m wearing it today depends on what the Red Sox did last night in the opening game of the American League Championship Series.
If they beat the Houston Astros, I’m wearing it. And, if they didn’t, I’m not. (I can’t tell you for sure because I had to write this before Saturday night’s game.)
Anyway, let me tell you about this hoodie. And one that preceded it.
The last one first: it’s gray with the Boston Red Sox insignia emblazoned on it and I wore it to work Oct. 5 when Sox eked out a 5-4 win over the Yankees in Game 1 of the division series.
Figuring it was a good omen, I wore it again the next day when David Price pitched. Badly. And briefly. Suffice to say the gray hoodie was benched for the rest of the season.
Cut to Monday. Since it was unthinkable not to wear Red Sox gear to work for that night’s game, I assessed my options: choose from a half-dozen short-sleeved shirts (that doesn’t count the Jacoby Ellsbury shirt which I permanently retired when he signed with the Yankees) or pick from one of my four remaining Sox hoodies. (I know, I know, I got a little carried away when the VF Outlet used to sell pro sports stuff cheap. Too bad they still don't. Loved those tent sales!)
OK, back to the matter at hand. Since our office is usually freezing, I opted for a hooded sweatshirt, this time, a wordless navy blue one decorated only with a pair of bright red sox.
It proved to be a charm. Boston won 16-1. In Yankee Stadium, nonetheless.
The next day, my choice was clearly a no-brainer: don the same hoodie again. Which I did. I also told my coworkers I was doing it on purpose. Just in case anyone (i.e. Not a Sox Fan) wondered. And to keep the mojo working, I parked in the exact same space in the parking lot.
While the game that night was a ninth inning nailbiter that had me screaming at the TV, the Sox ended up victorious, emerging as AL division champs. (Did I mention they did it in Yankee Stadium?)
So now it’s the weekend and the question is what am I wearing? Or more to the point, what am I wearing today?
Because yesterday, I, of course, wore the navy blue hoodie with the bright red sox. It’s the outcome of last night’s game that’s dictated what I have on today. Whether it’s the same sweatshirt or I had to pinch-hit.
Sorry I can’t tell you here. But I’ll be out running some errands in Dartmouth this afternoon and if you happen to see me, you’ll have your answer.
I’m the one who wears my Red Sox heart on my … hoodie.
