FAIRHAVEN — Peter F. DeCosta, 77, of New Bedford died September 30, 2017 at Alden Court Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.
Born in New Bedford, MA on June 30, 1940, Peter was the son of the late Anthony and Deolinda (DeSouza) DeCosta. Survivors include a sister, Deolinda R. Harrington of New Bedford; several nieces and nephews including John Anthony Harrington, Jennifer Lynn Harrington and her husband, Aaron Mello, all of New Bedford; his great-nephew, Evan Jacob Mello and his great-nieces, Emma Paige Mello and Ella Mackenzie Mello who were a great source of much joy and laughter in his life.
Peter was the brother of the late Anthony DeCosta, Jr., Joaquim DeCosta, Charles DeCosta, Lionel “Jack” DaCosta, Lillian Freitas, Irene Gentile, Janice Sullivan and Joyce A. Pickering.
Mr. DeCosta received a bachelor's degree with distinction from Southeastern Massachusetts University and two master's degrees from the University of Connecticut and Massachusetts Institute Of Technology where he was a Federally sponsored Fellow of the Center for Advanced Engineering Study. He also completed graduate studies at Harvard University, The University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Northeastern University, The University of Virginia and Boston University.
His professional experience included many years of scientific and engineering work for the Federal Government, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. Most recently he was employed as an engineer at the U.S. Army Natick Research and Development Laboratories in Natick, MA.
Peter was a sports fan who enjoyed watching the Red Sox play as well as all of the Patriot's games. He was always trying out new recipes and became a really great cook. Peter enjoyed reading books, especially mystery novels and was always planning various trips to take once he had thoroughly researched his destination.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in South Dartmouth, MA and a member of many religious organizations throughout the world. At his request, his funeral was private. His funeral Mass was celebrated on October 7, 2017 in St. Mary's Church, South Dartmouth and his burial was in St. John's Cemetery.
His family would like to thank everyone at Alden Court Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center and hospice for the wonderful care that Peter received.
