NEW BEDFORD — Manuel Raposo Tavares, 81 of Acushnet, passed away at Care One at New Bedford, on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Ligia M. (Furtado Pacheco) Tavares.

He was born in Arrifes, St. Miguel, Azores to the late Manuel de Sousa and Maria Carolina (Raposo) Tavares.

A communicant of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church and formerly employed as a presser at Textile Industry, until his retirement, Mr. Tavares was a member of the Amalgamated Textile Union.

He is survived by his wife of Acushnet, a son John M. Tavares and his wife Christine of Acushnet, a brother Vitorino Tavares of St. Miguel, a sister Natalia Tavares of St. Miguel, several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be Monday, October 16, 2017, from 6 to 8 PM at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home, 512 No. Front Street, New Bedford. His funeral services Tuesday, at 7:45 AM at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 8:45 AM in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle Street, New Bedford. Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery.
