Almost, three years ago the voters of New Bedford voted in favor of the Community Preservation Act.

At the recent Community Preservation Commission Public Meeting the applicants for projects submitted were recommended to City Council.

The Buttonwood Park Outdoor Adult Fitness Project was a project which was submitted by two grassroots groups; the Cultural Consultants and Buttonwood Park Neighborhood Association, collaborating together with the City of New Bedford Parks and Recreation Department.

Unfortunately, our project was not recommended to move to the next phase. The Community Preservation Committee was true to their name with their selection of preservation projects which was almost 100 percent for preservation and restoration. Unfortunately, only a few projects in the other categories were funded.

Two points: the submission process of the project application would be difficult for most grassroots groups to move forward without a vast knowledge of a process such as the CPA application.

As taxpayers we would question some of the recommended projects to be voted and awarded by the City Council.

Remember, it is our tax dollars.
