Four years ago, there was a vision of a place that students at New Bedford High School could access to find warm clothing as winter was approaching, and a pantry filled with non-perishable food to take home. Three and a half years ago, that vision became a reality, in part because of the generosity of the Greater New Bedford Community.
The Whaler's Attic and Pantry has met the needs of many, many students. We have been able to provide students in need with warm coats, hats and scarves to prepare them for winter. As the holiday season begins, it is time to recognize and thank those who were able to help in ways, large and small, through goods and cash donation since the inception of The Attic.
We are paring down the items that we want to be able to give to our students. These include coats, scarves, hats, gloves, and boots. Our present focus is to help all students including those students, who arrive from warm climates and don't have adequate clothing for winter. We know that attendance is impacted by the weather. Providing appropriate clothing allows the students to arrive for school on time and able to learn. We want to offer toiletries, including toothpaste, detergent, and paper products. Our pantry could use foods that are non-perishable that we can offer at the end of the day, or over the weekend. Hunger does not discriminate.
We continue to need the support of the community and we ask again to consider helping our high school students through donations. Many of our students have circumstances that include homelessness, family illness and loss of employment.
The core values that we impress upon our students every day include responsibility, determination, creativity, pride and respect. These are, in tandem with hope for their future, the foundation of building up some amazing human beings.
We thank you in advance for all that you have done previously. Our hope is that your gift to our students teaches them the value of paying it forward. We wish the members of our school community and the community at large, a peaceful and abundant holiday season.
