After losing their first game in the Cal Ripken District 5 tournament, the Fairhaven Acushnet Youth Baseball 9U all-star team looked likely to make an early exit. Once their backs were to the wall, they showed what they were made of by winning on five straight nights against the best the district had to offer, scoring 10-plus runs in all five games to win the district title.

The capper was a thrilling 11-10 win over Raynham. Down 4 in the first, FAYB closed to 4-3 through two with Evan Lamontagne, Ryan Vieira, Matty Moniz and Boston Bettencourt (two-run double) leading the way.

Lamontagne and Christopher were able to pitch their way out of a bases loaded jam to keep their team within striking distance, and down to their last two outs Lamontagne connected for his second triple of the game. Following a walk to Ryan Vieira, Christopher slammed a double (his fifth and sixth RBI's of the night) and we were headed to extras at 9-9.

Down (again!) 10-9 in the bottom of the seventh, Fairhaven Acushnet struck with a leadoff triple from Josh Vieira. Matty Moniz and Boston Bettencourt walked to load the bases with one out. From there, heads-up base running got them the win. After a pop-out to the infield, Vieira took a jump off of the bag. As the Raynham shortstop attempted to chase him down, Vieira won the footrace to the plate to tie the game. Moniz took third, then scored the “run-off” game winner on a Raynham error.

After the game, Fairhaven Acushnet celebrated with its trademark chant: “Can I get a YEEEAAAAHHH!"

The 9U team will now be one of eight teams playing for the state tournament in Berkley from July 14-21.
