SOMERSET — The weather for the annual Billington Family Memorial Fourth of July 5K Road Race was a little better than usual last Tuesday. There have been a lot of years where the weather has been really hot. But for this year's race, the temperature was in the 60 degree range at the start and then got hotter as the race went along.
Somerset's Lucia Alzaga was the first place overall female winner with a time of 23:38. Alzaga ran the Finish On the 50 10 kilometer race the night before in Foxborough. She said she usually does better at longer distance races.
"I was surprised," she said of her performance at the Billington race. "I didn't know how well my body was going to respond after last night. "I couldn't believe I was in the lead at the beginning. That never happens."
The race route went past Alzaga's house where she could see her white German shepherd dog, Angel, in the window.
"It's so nice to run in your hometown," Alzaga said. "This was my first local race."
