SOMERSET — Edward Callahan, who has been vice principal at Keith Middle School in New Bedford for the past two years, has been hired for the same position at Somerset Middle School.
School Superintendent Jeffrey Schoonover said there were more than 50 applicants for the job. He said Somerset Middle School Principal Pauline Camara and a screening committee recommended Callahan for the job to him. He said he talked to Callahan and approved his appointment to the vice principal position at the middle school. Schoonover said everything Camara told him about Callahan was evident in his interview with him and said he is an "exceptional choice" for the job.
Before he was a vice principal at Keith Middle School, Callahan was a social studies teacher at a charter school in Franklin. Schoonover said Callahan has a very long history of being a coach for basketball and baseball. He was a basketball coach at Holbrook High School and a girls' basketball coach at Bridgewater-Raynham Middle School. Schoonover said Callahan also coached basketball and baseball in Middleboro for many years.
Schoonover said Callahan is also a retired U.S. Postal Service employee. He said he likes Callahan's wealth of experience from being a middle school principal, to teaching at a charter school, coaching and working at the Postal Service.
Schoonover said Callahan has signed a three-year contract with the Somerset Public Schools. His salary is $87,000. He will replace Tonya Curt-Hoard who has taken a job as a principal at another middle school closer to where she lives.
