SOMERSET — Selectman Holly McNamara, who has some experience with building ballparks, wants the town to look into the possibility of bringing the Pawtucket Red Sox to town.

With Pawtucket Red Sox Chairman Larry Lucchino looking to build a new ballpark for the team, McNamara said she wants to come up with a proposal for an area in Somerset where a stadium could be built.

McNamara said she does not know what location in town could be a fit for a minor league baseball stadium. She said some more study would have to be done on that.

McNamara was involved in the construction of a Major League ballpark in San Diego for the San Diego Padres with Petco Park. She said the new ballpark completely revitalized the city which she said is now flourishing. McNamara said San Diego was like a ghost town before the stadium was built, but after new park opened, restaurants, shops and retail stores started opening around the area. She said she would hope building a stadium in Somerset would have a similar impact on the town.

"I actually worked on that project and lived there before and after and it made a huge difference," McNamara said.

McNamara said there are financial agreements between cities and teams on building stadiums and Somerset would have to look at what that financial agreement would be before deciding on if a stadium could be built in town. She said the numbers may not work out, but she said the town has to at least try to see if a proposal is feasible.

McNamara worked for project executive Alan Petrasek as a field engineer when she was in graduate school on the Petco Park project. She said Petrasek worked for Clark Construction which was the lead partner in a joint venture to build the ballpark. She said Petrasek had a great working relationship with Lucchino who was working for the Padres at the time.

McNamara said she has no idea if the Pawtucket Red Sox would consider Somerset for the stadium. She said it could depend on how the town markets itself. McNamara said the proposal to build a hotel on the town owned Route 6 land in Somerset and the Hyperloop proposal she has made to bring that transportation to the area could tie into a proposal for a stadium.

"I love baseball," McNamara said.

The team has looked at Providence, R.I. as a possible location for a stadium. Worcester has also been mentioned recently as a possible candidate. The Pawtucket Red Sox are the Triple A team for the Boston Red Sox, just one level below the Major League team.
