SOMERSET — Mary Perry puts salt in a generator at Divine Images & Sanctuary Day Spa. The generator crushes the salt into very small particles that are dispersed into a chamber where people can sit.

Lights flash in the chamber to tell people when to take deep breaths. The sound of the ocean and waves are heard from a recording in the chamber where Perry says the salt penetrates the skin and the lungs to help treat a variety of conditions from eczema to asthma to colds.

Perry said Divine Images & Sanctuary Day Spa is the only spa in Massachusetts that has the Halotherapy Salt Chamber.

"We're excited that we're able to bring it here and we want to reach out to surrounding communities so they can increase their wellness and health," Perry said.

Perry said the concept for the Halotherapy Salt Chamber goes back to salt miners in Poland over a hundred years ago. She said people noticed at that time that the salt miners seemed to be healthier than other people who lived in the area.

Perry said the larger salt molecules that people get on themselves at the beach have some benefits, but they are not the same as the benefits from the Halotherapy salt chamber.

"It's not like you are going to have salt all over you and you're going to have to brush it off," Perry said of the treatment. "It is so microscopic that it goes inside your skin and in your lungs."

Perry said the age range for people who can use the chamber ranges from six months old to 106 years old. She said adults can hold their children while in the chamber or seats can be provided for the children. Cellular phones, drinks and food are not allowed in the chamber. Perry said it is a good place to meditate.

"It's anti-bacterial," Perry said of the Halotherapy salt treatment. "It's anti-fungal. You don't have to take your clothes off in there. You can sit comfortably."

Perry said one of her employees has used the Halotherapy Salt Chamber and said it healed the eczema on her hands. She said there is clinical data that shows the Halotherapy salt treatment helps relieve eczema. She said the salt treatment can break up mucus from colds. Perry said Halotherapy was developed and clinically researched to help with respiratory and skin issues and to increase the overall immunity against viruses and bacteria. Some of the benefits of halotherapy she listed were that it decreases inflammation, balances the nervous system, minimizes the use of medications, improves stamina, increases endurance and increases oxygen delivery to muscle fibers. She said Halotherapy helps people to relax, sleep better, breath easier, look younger and have more energy.

Perry said the great grandson of the founder of the Mayo Clinic is on the board of advisors for the Halotherapy salt chamber which she says gives it more credibility.

Perry said the Halotherapy salt treatment can detoxify lungs and internal organs from recycled air that people breath on airplanes.

"The Canadien hockey team players all work with this up in Canada before and after the games," Perry said. "They have been testing the hockey players. They found a big change in their lung capacity with their games."

Perry said there are positive electrical ions in the atmosphere, but said people also need negative electrical ions to bring in calming, relaxing and healing effects. She said people are not ingesting salt in the chamber. She said people with high blood pressure can use the chamber.

Perry said the Halotherapy salt chamber treatment takes 15 minutes, which may fit into the busy schedules of people today better than salt cave treatments that take 45 minutes to an hour which also have different benefits.

On top of single treatments, a series of treatments can be purchased at the spa. Perry said the most inexpensive way to buy the Halotherapy Salt Chamber treatments is by the month.

Perry said the spa will eventually have a lot of therapeutic salts that clients can purchase to bring home for their own use, but said those salts will not take the place of the benefits that clients get from the Halotherapy Salt Chamber.

Divine Images & Sanctuary Day Spa has had the Halotherapy Salt Chamber for a little more than a month and Perry said she has received a good response to it so far. She said she wants to partner with area yoga studios, chiropractors and gymnasiums to spread the word about the salt treatment.
