The Westport Fishermen’s Association will host its annual Run for the Water at Horseneck Beach State Reservation in Westport on Saturday, May 5, and early registration runs through March 31.
The race gun will sound off at 10 a.m. at the state Department of Conservation and Recreation beach.
"Come out and run a beautiful, flat and fast 8K course along the beach and around the reservation with river views or choose the shorter 5K loop to run or walk for fun," the Westport Fishermen's Association said in a news release.
All proceeds will support the association's efforts to protect and preserve the Westport River and its marine habitat as well as scholarship and education programs.
The top three male and female 8K finishers win cash awards. Prizes also will be awarded to topm teams, 5K finishers and participants in other categories, according to the release. Pre-registered runners will receive free T-shirts. A post-race feast will be available, too.
Registration with a discounted fee of $20 runs through March 31. Regular registration is $25 and race day registration is $30. Participants who are age 14 and younger can run for $15 each. People who get friends to register will earn "free awards," according to the association.
Registration and referral details are available at racemenu.com/wfa14 or by downloading a mail-in form at westportriver.org.
The association is looking for volunteers to help with race preparations. Those interested should call (774) 264-9200 or email email@example.com.
