The Westport Wildcats girls tennis team won a pair of 3-2 decisions in Fall River to open the 2018 season.

On April 12, the Lady Wildcats defeated Bishop Connolly.

In singles, Annie MacMaster defeated Jillianne Chippendale, 6-1, 6-0, and Amber Valcourt defeated Lauren Leclair, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Connolly got a point at No. 3, where Emily Fiola defeated Anna Camissa, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, No. 1 Emily McMahon and Sam McCarthy lost to Theresa Rego and Sydney Nance, 6-1, 6-2, but the No. 2 team of Brianna Quinla and Gabby Machairas defeated Mikayla Saravo and Brynn Schwinard, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, for the margin of victory.

On April 9, the lady Wildcats edged BMC Durfee, getting opening-day wins at first and second singles and second doubles, as they would against Connolly.

MacMaster defeated Faith Clonister, 6-2, 6-0, while Valcourt defeated Cali Lima, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Durfee got its singles point from Adrianne Fernandes, who defeated Anna Camissa, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, McMahon and McCarthy lost to Amaya Travossos and Allyson Halling, 6-0, 6-4, but the No. 2 team of Quinla and Machairas defeated Catarina and Kindra Caneiro, 6-4, 6-2.

Boys split on home court

On April 12, the Wildcats evened their record at 1-1 with a 3-2 victory over Bishop Connolly.

No. 1 singles player Evan Kidd was the lone Wildcat to come out of the opening week with two victories, defeating Samuel DaCosta, 6-2, 6-4, in his second match of the young season.

Brendan Martin dropped a tough three-setter on court two, bowing 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to Nicholas Howiak, but No. 3 Alex Raposa outlasted Cristopher Mulvey in a final-set tiebreaker, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).

Doubles was also closely contested. Connolly won on first court as Luc Domogola and Nate Chimm defeated Andrew Clayton and Smit Patel, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, and Westport got the deciding point from Jonatan Latender and Mikyle Couto, who defeated John and Zachary Dean, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, on second court.

The April 9 opener against visiting Durfee was unkind to the Wildcats, who got their lone point in the 4-1 defeat from Kidd, who defeated Roger DeSouza because of injury. Martin fell, 6-0, 6-0, to Kris Hutchins, while Raposa lost in three see-saw sets to Rich Cabral. Clayton and Patel lost at first doubles, 6-1, 6-0, to Barren Smizic and Tom Panchley, and Couto and Zach Rothwell lost, 6-4, 6-1, to Luke Cabral and Ryan Mauricio.
